Last 70 Days of 2013 – Day 20: Become a person of excellence

“Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him….” Daniel 6:3

Today, we are 20 Days into the #LAST70DAYSOF2013 series. I thank God for the grace so far. I believe He will take us through to the end. I want to share something very passionately with you today on becoming a person of excellence because I believe excellent people will always be at the top and conquer their challenges. I have come to know that excellence is a possibility. At a point in life, the eyes of my spirit and of understanding were opened to a dimension of excellence. My work with young people focuses on equipping them for excellence in life and if you know me, you will agree that my message is that of excellence in the life of a believer. So, talking about excellence, I’d like you to know that it is what drives me. I am passionate about it and do my best daily to be excellent. I believe we can reach this world and make it a better place if we are become excellent in the manner we conduct every aspect of our life. I will also like to inform that when we talk of becoming excellent, it is something that comes from God, for the case of Daniel reveals that ‘there is a dimension of the spirit of God called the spirit of excellence.

Excellence is the opposite of mediocrity; it is a word that means unusual goodness or worth; outstanding feature or quality. Is it true that God is interested in you becoming an excellent person? The answer is yes! God hates mediocrity (poorness, weakness, patchiness, averageness, ordinariness, and commonplace). God has nothing to gain from your failure. No one who followed God failed in their endeavours. If you are truly a Child of God working in the Kingdom, part of your earthly rewards will include excelling in all you do, including your academics. God knows that when you excel, there is a joy and happiness that comes with it, which is important to your Christian walk so He will do everything to make you have that joy. God also knows that every success you achieve in your life will bring Him Glory and will showcase Him to your world so He will give you what it takes to succeed.
If you are born again, you must understand certain things about your new creation reality as totally outlined in the word of God that it is first of God’s utmost desire that His sons and daughter prosper in EVERYTHING they do including becoming excellent in all their endeavours. God does not just want to see you speak in tongues, cast out devils, read your bible cover to cover and evangelise the whole world only to fail in your life’s endeavour; that is become mediocre in your relationships, academics, business, career, family or finances. The devil will let you do all that but makes sure that you do not have anything to show for it. You must understand that one of the tools you can use to evangelise is excellent performance in your life. That was why Matthew in his gospel version said “You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill”-(The Message). Some people try to call it carnality but you need to know that God rejoices over you when you excel in every area of your life as much as He does when you win a soul.

Our world is in need of excellent men and women who will take charge and turn things around. No one abhors excellence unless the person is a devil. Everyone loves excellence. There is this attraction that excellent people have towards them. If we had conducted your life more excellently in 2013, we would have achieved a greater success. That is why if you are selling books on the street and you are excellent in the way you arrange the books and attend to your potential customers, do not be surprised when you become so successful that you will move from the street to the shop. If you are excellent in the way you dress, you will attract several admirers. If you are excellent in delivering speeches, people will soon begin to pay to come to your talks. If you are excellent in the way you carry out any assignment given to you at your place of work, you will not be surprised when all other mediocre members of the organisation are placed under your supervision. These stories are clearly indicated in the life of people like Daniel in whom an excellent spirit was found. Daniel decided from the beginning to become an excellent person and he was distinguished.

However, becoming an excellent person does not come on the platter of gold. It comes with a price tag. You must invest into excellence. You must desire and pray for the Spirit of excellence to come upon you. You must associate with excellent minds. You must read excellent books and attend seminars and conferences to learn other people’s stories of how they achieved excellence.

To become a person of excellence in 2014 you must understand that:

Excellence must be a mentality
What God does in your life flows from what your mind conceives (Ephesians 3:320; Philemon 14). God cannot do anything without your mind being on it. To achieve excellence, you must first think excellence. Your mind must agree to it and produce the same signals. Do not say what you do not mean in your heart. As much as you can think about excellence, with time, it will begin to manifest. This is because your thoughts are as powerful as spoken prayers.
Excellence must be a value to you and seen as an important component of the totality of your life’s success story or your life’s dream
The values we pick up as children end up controlling our lives when we become adults. Some of us have very wrong values which we picked up from our homes, schools we attended, friends and relatives that we grew up with.
Excellence is a vision/dream/conviction you must have
Where there is no vision, the people perish the bible clearly states. You cannot underestimate the power of vision in everything you do in life. Every man who has succeeded in one thing or the other has been a man of vision. Whether it is to win a trophy in a sport competition, to lead an organisation, become a best seller author or the president of America. You do not approach your academics with a wishy-washy attitude and expect that you will excel. You must consciously, with your eyes open and your mind active create a vision of academic excellence in your life.
Excellence must be set as a goal
Vision gives birth to goal setting. The way you know how far you are living your vision is in the goals you set and how much of the goal you are achieving. If my vision is to graduate best in my faculty, then I must set a goal to come up best at the end of every session. This will also give birth to setting smaller goals like making “A” grades in all my courses….IT IS POSSIBLE…..at least by all means do not get lower than the person next to you. One good thing with setting goals is that you are fired up to do better when you achieve it. Achieving goals inspires you and makes you understand that you can do and achieve anything when you set your heart on it.

Excellence must be planned towards

It is always said that not planning is simply planning to fail. As a Christian you must plan. Planning makes you like God. You can imagine how long it took God to plan for the successful redemption of mankind…..thousands of years. Planning helps you to avoid wastage of time, energy, and resources. It helps you to know what to do and that at the right time. When you do not plan, you will be pushed to and fro by everything that comes your way and you will lack organisation. You must plan how much time and money you will commit to becoming an excellent person and how you will spend such time and money.
Excellence requires you to be responsible- RESPOND TO YOUR ABILITY (You can read Day 1 of this series on http://www.apehomede.blogspot.com)
You must be responsible to and for your life. There must be a responding ability inside of you to the demands that life may place on you; things like resilience, persistence, commitment, learning posture, curiosity, teachability, networking, etc. must be found in you. You must take charge of situations in your life and ensure they turn out according to your dream to become an excellent person.
Excellence requires hard work, diligence and consistency.
Proverbs 22:29 “Observe people who are good at their work-skilled workers are always in demand and admired; they don’t take a back seat to anyone”. (The Message). Diligence requires persistent effort and skilfulness. I can tell you that many fail not because they do not have goo and great visions, but because they are lazy. If you will excel in your life, your hands must be diligently on the plough of your destiny and diligence requires persistent effort. The diligent never gives up in the face of challenges. Every excellent person is a diligent person. You must work out your salvation with fear and trembling.
Excellence requires grace from God.
Do not depend on your strength alone. There is what is called GRACE that you need. Eccl 9:11, I Corinthians 15:10- But the grace (the unmerited favour and blessing) of God, I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not (found to be) for nothing (fruitless and without effect). In fact, I worked harder than all of them (the apostles), though it was not really I, but the grace (the unmerited favour and blessing) of God which was with me. (The Amplified Bible)

Prayer: God will make your life to excel in 2014 because He will give you His excellent spirit. You will not only be outstanding but you will stand out in 2014 in Jesus name, Amen!
